Biography

Josaphat Uchechukwu J. Onwumere (Ph.D) is an economist and banking/finance expert. He is a Professor of Banking/Finance and Economic Development in the Department of Banking and Finance, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Enugu Campus). He was Head of Department of Banking and Finance in the University for four years (2010 – 2014) and is currently Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration.Professor Onwumere attended the Holy Ghost College, Owerri; the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the University of Jos. He is also an alumnus of the International Institute for Management Development, Lausanne, Switzerland.A consummate intellectual and technocrat, he had been a practitioner in banking, management, research, strategy and consultancy. He has banking experience spanning over twelve years at management level in the Nigerian Banking industry. He was a director general of Abuja Graduate School.In the University system, he has taught several courses at various times. Courses taught at the undergraduate level include:- Introductory Econometrics, Introductory Statistics, Economic Planning, History of Economic Thought, Development Economics, Bank Management, Monetary and Fiscal Policies, Strategic Management in the Financial Services Industry, Advanced Financial Management, Marketing of Financial Services, Investment Banking, Bank Lending and Loan Administration; and Law, Ethics and Corporate Governance. At the postgraduate level, they include:- Money and Banking, Advanced Econometric Theory, Advanced Quantitative Analysis, Development Economics/Planning, Managerial Economics, Monetary and Fiscal Policies, Bank Lending and Loan Administration, Advanced Quantitative Decision Techniques, Theory of Financial Regulation, Advanced Research Methods, Money and Capital Markets, Advanced Macroeconomics, Advanced Public Finance, and Public Sector Financial Management. A seasoned administrator, Professor Onwumere had been Chairman, Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) Time Table Committee and member, Senate Time Table Committee at the University of Nigeria. He is currently University of Nigeria Senate Representative on University of Nigeria Council Committee on Budget Monitoring; Chairman, FBA Consultancy Committee, and Chairman of many committees in the Faculty. He has solely supervised over fifteen (15) successful Ph.Ds, several M.Scs and MBAs in Banking and Finance at the University of Nigeria.Professor Onwumere is an External Examiner at Postgraduate level – MBA, M.Sc and Ph.D in Banking and Finance at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (MBA, M.Sc and Ph.D); Anambra State University (now Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University), Igbariam (M. Sc, Ph.D); and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (M.Sc). He is also external examiner (for B.Sc Banking and Finance) at Caritas University. He had been Visiting Professor at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Oyo State.Professor Onwumere is a continuous and committed researcher. He is a distinguished scholar and respected intellectual. He has over ninety (90) publications which include a single authored book, one co-authored book, two (2) co-edited books, one (1) co-authored monograph, contributions to manuals and chapters in books, and several articles in reputable local and international journals. He is also a consultant to some reputed local and international organizations.Professor Onwumere is the Coordinator of three University of Nigeria Research groups: Capital Market Studies Research Group, Monetary and Fiscal Policies Research Group, and Microfinance and Small Business Development Research Group.
