Biography
Dr. Blake Byers, Ph.D. is a General Partner at GV (formerly Google Ventures). Dr. Byers has working with GV since 2010 and focuses on life sciences sector and was previously the Partner. Dr. Byers partners with founders on life-science and digital companies, from drug development and healthcare delivery to financial services and information security. Dr. Byers served as a Marketer at Electronic Arts and an angel investor. He began doing biomedical research as a high school student at Stanford in 2002 and has worked in seven laboratories over the last nine years. Dr. Byers led direct research projects on biomedical engineering and stem cells at Stanford University in optogenetics and stem cell biology. He has a background in engineering and investing and helped start two companies out of his house: Womply and Transcriptic. Dr. Byers's research has spanned antibiotic mechanisms of action, endothelial cell binding, bioimpediance device design, mesendoderm stem cell isolation, Parkinson’s disease modeling and fMRI imaging of allogeneic brain grafts — resulting in multiple publications and two first author papers (Cell Stem Cell, 2011 and PLoS One, 2011). He has been a Director of Magenta Therapeutics, Inc. since October 24, 2017. He is a Board Observer of Obsidian Therapeutics, Inc. He serves as a Director at Flurish Inc. He is an engineer, scientist and entrepreneur. He was an angel investor. Dr. Byers holds a Ph.D. in Bioengineering and Master of Science in Bioengineering from Stanford University. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Economics from Duke University.
