Biography
Cand.philol. with a major subject in history from the University of Oslo in 1976. NAVF and university fellow at the University of Oslo (1978-84). Builders writer Alta Municipality (in a period also Conservator of the Alta Museum) (1984-1990). From 1990 Professor Associate Professor in International Relations / North Studies at the University of Tromsø. Established as a professor from 1994. Deputy Director of Roald Amundsen's Center for Arctic Research (1991-1992). Visiting scholar at Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge (1996, 2003). Doctor Honoris Causa at the State Pomeranian University in Arkhangelsk (1998). Professor II at the Murmansk State Educational University (1999-2000). Head of Department at the Department of History (1999-2001).
Research Interest
1) Russian / Soviet historiography, 2) North Norwegian history and 3) Northwestern studies, especially political aspects of Norwegian-Russian relations in the north approx. From 1814 to 1917.
