Biography
Dr. Stephen Taplin is the Deputy Associate Director of the Healthcare Delivery Research Program within the National Cancer Institute’s Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences. He is an expert in the field of cancer screening and built his research career around the problems that arose from his clinical experience as a primary care physician. Before joining NCI he was responsible for delivery and evaluation of a breast cancer-screening program serving 100,000 women in an integrated health plan.
Research Interest
He joined the National Cancer Institute as a Senior Scientist in 2003 after being a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Washington and an Investigator in the Center for Health Studies at Group Health in Seattle. He has led the development of research into how individuals, groups and organizations act and interact to affect cancer care delivery. He publishes regularly in peer-reviewed journals including work on mammography and the conceptualization of problems and interventions in cancer care delivery. His current work emphasizes understanding how teams affect healthcare delivery.
