Doug Greer

Biography

Douglas Greer is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal Insurance and Risk Advisory Services in New York, advising organizations on financial, operational and strategic business issues. His primary areas of focus include evaluating and developing strategic business plans and financial projections, advising clients regarding turnaround and restructuring initiatives, and developing analytics to enhance decision making. With more than 16 years of business experience, Mr. Greer has advised clients on acquisitions, divestitures, operational turnarounds, business due diligence and balance sheet restructurings. He has advised senior lender groups, unsecured creditors, policyholder groups, private equity firms and operating companies across a broad range of industries. Within the insurance sector, recent assignments include: assisting a state insurance department to assess restructuring options for a wind and hail insurer of last resort; assisting a division of a large P&C insurer in its evaluation of alternatives including complete or partial run off or strategic sale; developing a business plan and investor presentation for “greenfield” onshore / offshore reinsurer of fixed annuities; and advising a consortium of health insurers regarding the runoff (in rehabilitation) of an LTC insurer to reduce the magnitude of an expected insolvency and the assessments (if liquidated) from state operated guaranty funds. Additional engagements include working with: a senior lender regarding a distressed hedge fund to provide restructuring and bankruptcy-related advisory services and to value its collateral, including a life settlements portfolio with approximately $700 million in face value; an ad hoc committee of bondholders with financial guaranties from a major monoline insurer to provide financial advisory services related to the insurer’s rehabilitation process; and a senior lender to review a business plan of an underperforming insurer and provide advice through the amendment process. Before joining A&M, Mr. Greer spent six years with a turnaround consulting firm in New York, where his experience included strategic advisory, restructuring (both in and outside of Chapter 11) and operational turnaround assignments for Interstate Bakeries, Werner Ladder, USGen New England and Pillowtex. He also spent five years in the corporate finance and private equity industries, most recently at H.I.G. Bayside Capital, where he was an investment professional focused on evaluating control and non-control investments in distressed companies. Mr. Greer earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Cornell University and a master’s in business administration degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. He has earned Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP) and a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA).
