Biography
Gregory Nelson is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Financial Industry Regulatory Advisory Services in Charlotte. With a primary focus of helping financial institutions address challenging issues, he possesses a broad knowledge base of a wide variety of banking matters. Mr. Nelson brings more than 21 years of regulatory experience in the financial services industry. Most recently, he served for five years at Wachovia in numerous leadership roles, including Mortgage Risk Executive, responsible for providing strategic risk direction to Wachovia Mortgage and Retail Credit, and partnering with other mortgage and retail credit executives to build strategies to grow the business, while aggressively managing and mitigating risk to the portfolio. In addition, his responsibilities included risk oversight for loan production activities, mortgage servicing and default management, as well as portfolio risk analysis and loss mitigation activities. Prior to this position, Mr. Nelson was the Credit and Operations Manager of Structured Transactions and Analytical Research (STAR) in Wachovia Treasury, assisting in Wachovia’s preparation for implementation of the Basel II capital regulation. This included developing operational control processes, data requirements and compliant quantification measurement systems for retail credit and mortgage portfolios. Additionally, Mr. Nelson worked closely with business unit leadership and credit risk model development teams to establish best practices for retail credit and mortgage portfolio risk measurement. Previously, Mr. Nelson served as a commissioned National Bank Examiner in the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). He led and participated in bank examinations throughout the U.S. and gained extensive experience in problem bank supervision activities, including failed banks and savings and loans. He was assigned to the OCC’s Large Bank Supervision Program, with special emphasis on mortgage banking, retail credit, capital markets and commercial lending. Mr. Nelson served as a national resource and traveled throughout the country at the request of OCC senior management on challenging bank examinations in a leadership role. His experience included an extended assignment with the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) after a large thrift with highly complex manufactured housing loan and securitization activities was placed in receivership. During examinations, he routinely performed testing and comprehensive examination activities of front and back-end credit operations. Testing included assessing cash payment activities versus posting of non-cash payments, monitoring calls for collections and default management activities, and ensuring timely loss recognition and adequate loss reserves, as well as effective defaulted collateral administration. Mr. Nelson earned a bachelor’s degree in business at Iowa State University. He is a commissioned National Bank Examiner and was a member of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Nelson co-authored the OCC’s original mortgage banking handbook, addressing safety and soundness expectations, and assisted with OCC and interagency policy development for emerging issues. He has also served as a guest speaker at numerous mortgage banking industry conferences and worked on interagency development of expectations for the Basel II capital regulation.
