Biography

Jack McCarthy, Sr. is a Managing Director of Alvarez & Marsal in New York responsible for overseeing the firm’s growing international businesses in the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and India. With more than 30 years of hands-on international business and leadership experience, he has served as a CFO in the energy sector and brings deep skills in finance, planning, risk management, tax and accounting. He is also currently involved in the global wind-down and restructuring of Lehman Brothers. Mr. McCarthy joined A&M after 16 years with the Williams Companies, a major energy company, where he served as the Senior Vice President of Finance and CFO for 10 years. During that time, Williams grew from five billion dollars to 38 billion dollars in assets. As CFO, he had responsibility for finance (treasury), controller, tax, corporate communications, governmental relations and risk management (insurance). In addition, he was involved with the planning group for both near-term and forward planning. He was a member of the executive group responsible for planning, divestitures, acquisitions and integration of the acquisitions from both an operational and financial perspective. Previously, he served as Executive Director of Tax with Tenneco, Inc., Vice President of Tax with the El Paso Company, and Director of Tax for Europe and Africa with Phillips Petroleum in London. He was also a tax manager with Arthur Young & Company. Internationally, Mr. McCarthy brings extensive experience dealing with business opportunities in both Europe and Africa. While at Williams, he had responsibility for financial reporting of international operations. At Tenneco, he led all of its international tax planning, and at Phillips he was responsible for tax compliance with joint responsibility for tax planning for Europe and Africa. Mr. McCarthy earned a bachelor's degree and an MBA from University of Michigan. He also earned a juris doctor and is a past member of the State Bar of Michigan. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
