John Hanson

Biography

John Hanson is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s North American Commercial Restructuring practice in Dallas. With more than 10 years of restructuring experience, Mr. Hanson has advised both debtors and creditors in Chapter 11 bankruptcies, out of court restructuring, evaluation of strategic alternatives and transaction due diligence. Mr. Hanson brings experience across a range of industries including retail, restaurants, manufacturing, packaging and distribution, commercial food products and oil and gas services. Among his recent engagements, as financial advisor to a $200 million media services company, Mr. Hanson led the debtor’s operations and managed the strategic alternatives process to complete the sale of the company. He was responsible for multiple work streams, including liquidity forecasting and management, drafting a stand-alone restructuring plan and executing activities required to close the sale of the business and transition assets to the buyer. Mr. Hanson also served as restructuring advisor to a $2 billion alternative investment fund during Piccadilly Restaurants, LLC’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy. He provided guidance on the debtor’s cash burn and liquidity in support of the lender’s motion to provide debtor-in-possession financing. He also managed negotiations with the unsecured creditors committee and developed financial projections as part of the lender’s competing Plan of Reorganization. Following feasibility and valuation hearings, the court found that the plan satisfied “cramdown” standards and confirmed the nonconsensual Plan of Reorganization. Previously, Mr. Hanson led a Chapter 7 liquidation of an apparel retailer to maximize economic value of the estate. He secured a stalking horse bid and analyzed the value of competing bids during auction. He also managed the company’s activities related to the GOB sale, including reconciling daily sales and collection activity, remitting funds to liquidators, calculating cost and retail metrics and finalizing gross rings analysis to substantiate the release of final funds. Mr. Hanson also served as corporate advisor to a $150 million contract printer following the default with its senior and subordinated lenders. He developed financial models consolidating independent business units and locations to market the company to strategic and financial buyers. He led due diligence activities with potential parties resulting in a pre-packaged bankruptcy agreement. He also oversaw preparation of final close and account reconciliations to calculate purchase price adjustments for close of sale of business. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Hanson was a Senior Vice President in Deloitte’s Corporate Restructuring Group’s debtor advisory practice. Mr. Hanson earned an MBA from Boston College and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Richmond. He is a Certified Insolvency & Restructuring Advisor (CIRA).
