John Newman

Biography

John Newman is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s North American restructuring division in Detroit. He brings 15 years of experience in financial restructuring, process improvement, sponsor portfolio management, turnaround consulting and private equity investment. He has served underperforming and distressed companies, as well as a variety of related constituents. Mr. Newman has significant experience advising underperforming and distressed companies both in court and outside of Chapter 11. He guided clients through the restructuring process across industries including manufacturing, machining / fabrication, real estate, retail grocery, automotive, materials, distribution and testing equipment. He has also advised clients and other constituents including secured lenders and equity investors on business plan development and analysis, operational analysis, cost reductions, performance metrics, creditor and customer negotiations, product profitability and strategy. Within the automotive industry, Mr. Newman has advised management teams and equity sponsors at more than a dozen companies, including component manufacturers, testing and measurement suppliers, and aftermarket companies. Past clients include Cooper Standard Automotive, Precision Parts International, Intermet and Hastings Manufacturing Company. Mr. Newman supported Cooper Standard Automotive through the negotiation of an in-court restructuring, which emerged successfully from Chapter 11 in May 2010. He directed the activities of the A&M team on location, including debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing and negotiation, pre-bankruptcy preparation (Chapter 11 and Companies' Creditor Arrangement Act (CCAA)), liquidity management, supplier management and communications with key constituents. He also advised Precision Parts International (PPI) prior to and through a Chapter 11 in the wake of unsuccessful efforts to negotiate an out-of-court recapitalization with the equity sponsor and secured lenders. Working closely with management, major customers, and secured and unsecured creditors, PPI was successfully sold in an expedited 363 sale. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Newman was a Managing Director at Wynnchurch Capital. Earlier in his career, he was a Director at A&M and began his professional services career at Conway MacKenzie. Mr. Newman earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Michigan State University. He is a Certified Turnaround Professional and a Certified Management Accountant.
