Biography

Julie Kliger is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal Corporate Performance Improvement in San Francisco with over 20 years of experience leading healthcare improvement in hospitals and health systems. Ms. Kliger’s most recent engagement was aimed at assessing the corporate quality strategy and performance of an academic health system in Southern California. Recommendations to executive leadership included restructuring, rapid cycle improvement in patient care and implementing standardized methods for metrics analysis. Her responsibilities included leading the team, developing a standardized and structured interview process and overseeing scope, client relations and findings. Through her many publications and presentations, Ms. Kliger has been nationally recognized for achievements in best-in-class implementation and organizational change management and outcomes research, including the reduction of medication administration error and sepsis mortality. She led and managed a $16 million multi-year / multi-system project that reduced sepsis mortality by 54 percent and medication errors by 89 percent across 16 hospitals. Ms. Kliger’s past professional positions include Associate Director of Quality with the University of California Office of the President in the Division of Clinical Services, consultant for the California Association of Public Hospitals, Universities of California at San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles, Hill Physicians Medical Group, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), 3M, Wolters Kluwer Health, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), among other for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Ms. Kliger earned a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government where she focused on patient safety and leadership. She earned a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing from Columbia University in New York City and a bachelor’s of arts degree from UC Berkeley. She is a Fellow of the California Health Care Foundation’s (CHCF) Executive Healthcare Leadership Program. Ms. Kliger is a published author whose work can be found at The Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ) (2010, 2011, 2015), Archives of Internal Medicine (2010), Joint Commission’s Journal on Quality and Patient Safety (2009, 2012, 2015) and Journal of Nursing Administration (2010), among other notable publications.
