Biography
Dr Gavin Sacks is Clinical Director at IVFAustralia in Sydney, Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, and a consultant at both the Royal Hospital for Women and St George Hospital in Sydney. Dr. Sacks qualified from the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford in the UK, and completed his specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in London and Sydney. He completed a PhD in reproductive immunology at the University of Oxford, during which he did some of the earliest studies on natural killer cells in pregnancy. His publications on the pathogenesis of preeclampsia from that work are still widely cited. Since then he has turned his attention to infertility and miscarriage, and has over 40 publications in reproductive immunology. In particular, he has pioneered natural killer (NK) cell testing and the ‘Bondi protocol’ immune therapy in Australia. He has been invited to give lectures and presentations in countries as diverse as Australia, the UK, India, Vietnam, the Philippines and Korea. He continues to do basic research through the University of New South Wales where he is also a lecturer on the MSc in Reproductive Medicine degree. Dr. Sacks is an Associate Editor for the highly respected journal Human Reproduction. Dr. Sacks has always been first and foremost a clinician. His initial research interest in preeclampsia gave him a unique perspective for a reproductive medicine specialist, with a strong appreciation of what is required to achieve a healthy pregnancy. He personally manages over 450 IVF cycles a year, and also performs fertility procedures such as laparoscopy for endometriosis, hysteroscopy for adhesions and uterine septum, myomectomy (removal of fibroids), and testicular sperm extraction. He is particularly interested in individualised care and the concept of optimising every aspect of the reproductive pathway. He has been a strong advocate for PGS (chromosome screening) of embryos in an effort to better understand the place of immune therapy, and has played a major role in developing the use of that technology at IVFAustralia. Dr. Sacks is a subspecialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (UK) and a member of the Fertility Society of Australia, as well as a Fellow of the Australian and British Royal Colleges of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Dr. Sacks’ international experience and academic rigor further strengthens the team at BRI.
