Stephen D. Nimer

Biography

 Dr. Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., has been Scientific Advisor of Fortress Biotech, Inc. since June 16, 2017. Dr. Nimer serves as a Director of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, Florida. Dr. Nimer is a Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Dr. Nimer is an expert in the treatment of adult hematologic malignancies (or cancers of the blood) including leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes ("MDS"). Dr. Nimer served as the Head of the Division of Hematologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center since 1996 and served as its Chief of the Hematology Service since 1993. Dr. Nimer was at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center ("MSKCC") in New York for nearly 20 years. At MSKCC, he established the inpatient hematology service and the autologous stem cell transplantation program for hematologic malignancies. Dr. Nimer served as the Alfred P. Sloan Chair and Vice Chairman for Faculty Development at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He was associated with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center since 1993. He has been a Director of Abraxis Bioscience, Inc. since November 2007. He has been a Member of Clinical Advisory Board of Onconova Therapeutics, Inc. since March 2005. He served as an Independent Director of Fresenius Kabi Pharmaceuticals Holding, Inc. from May 2001 to November 23, 2007. He is a Member of the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. He served as a Member of Scientific Advisory Board for Caladrius Biosciences, Inc. (formerly Neostem, Inc.) since December 11, 2006. He is a member of many national professional organizations, including the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research and the International Society for Stem CellResearch. He is on the editorial boards of several journals, such as Leukemia Research, the American Journal of Oncology Review. He serves as a Reviewer for major medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) among many others. He serves on numerous national and international Grant Review Committees and is a prominent invited speaker at conferences on his areas of expertise. Dr. Nimer has published extensively on the topics of leukemia and MDS with over 200 citations in the PubMed index covering a range of disciplines from basic science to applied clinical research. He has authored or co-authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed papers, reviews, editorials and textbook chapters, primarily focused on issues concerning hematology and oncology. While at MSKCC, Dr. Nimer ran a very active laboratory that received one of two awards given to U.S. investigators by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a Specialized Center of Research in myeloid malignancies. He has also taught medicine at the Cornell University School of Medicine since 1993. He completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine, where he was named Chief Medical Resident. He holds an M.D. from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and a B.S. in biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Nimer is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Board-certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology, Dr. Nimer received his Medical Degree from the University of Chicago School of Medicine.
