Biography
José Artur Martinho Simões has been a full professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon since 1993. His scientific interests lie in the area of molecular energetics. He received his doctorate from Instituto Superior Técnico in 1981, and a postdoctoral degree from the California Institute of Technology, USA (1982-83). In 1988-89 he was visiting research officer at the National Research Council of Canada and, in 1996-97, was a guest researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA. He was secretary general and president of the Portuguese Society of Chemistry. He was director of the Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology (ITQB) of the New University of Lisbon and director of the Associated Laboratory of Oeiras (2008-11). He has been director of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon since March 2014.
