Biography
Sergey Bachurin graduated from Moscow State University (MSU) in 1975. In 1980 he defended his Ph.D. dissertation, and in 1993 the Doctor of Science dissertation in the field of chemistry. In 2003 he was elected as a personal member of Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 1981 he is working at the Institute of Physiologically Active Compounds Russian Academy of Sciences (IPAC RAS). Since 1986, he has been the Head of Laboratory of Neurochemistry. Since 2006 he holds a position of a Director of this Institute. Sergey Bachurin has been an invited scholar at the University of California, San Francisco, USA (1992) and at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, USA (1995). Areas of research interest related mainly to medicinal chemistry of neurodegenerative disorders, in particular, mechanism-based search for new medicines for neurological disorders, in particular, for Alzheimer’s disease treatment. He is a Titular Member of the Division of “Chemistry and Human Health” of the IUPAC and the Vice-Chairman of the Russian Society for Medicinal Chemistry. During the last 5 years, Bachurin has been the Principal Investigator of 8 international and 12 Russian research grants. He is the author of more than 150 articles in peer-reviewing journals and about 30 patents.
