Biography
Since June 1, 2010, Arden Bement has served as the Director for the Global Policy Research Institute. He became the first director of the Institute after heading the National Science Foundation (NSF). As Director of the NSF, Dr. Bement managed the sole federal agency that finances research and education in all areas of science and technology. He oversaw a budget of more than $6 billion that launched 100s of programs to support the research and education of roughly 200,000 scientists, engineers, educators and students across the United States as well as founded scientific institutions and organized a world-class educational infrastructure. He also serves as a member of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO and as the vice-chair of the Commission's Natural Sciences and Engineering Committee. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Bement is an ex officio member of the U.S. National Science Board, which guides NSF activities and serves as a policy advisory body to the President and Congress.
