Biography
1975: Graduated from the Economics Faculty of the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (MGU). 1978: Finished a post-graduate course at the MGU Economics Faculty. Candidate of Sciences (Economics); associate professor. Speaks English. Awarded the Honorary Certificate of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. 1967–1969: Served in the armed forces. 1969–1970: Adjuster of hydroelectric equipment at Gidroelektromontazh Enterprise, Leningrad. 1970–1978: Student, post-graduate student at MGU, Moscow. 1978–1988: Professor's assistant, senior lecturer at the F. Engels Leningrad Institute of Soviet Trade, Leningrad. 1988–1991: Senior lecturer, associate professor at the N.A. Voznesensky Leningrad Financial and Economic Institute, Leningrad. 1991–1992: Deputy Minister of Economics and Finance of the Russia Federation. 1992: Deputy Minister of Finance of the Russia Federation. 1992–1993: Deputy Chairman of the Bank of Russia. 1993–1996: Deputy Minister of Economics of the Russia Federation. 1996–1997: Aide on economic issues to the President of Russia. 1997–2002: First Deputy Minister of Finance of the Russia Federation. 2002–2013: Chairman of the Bank of Russia. From March 2013: Adviser to the Governor of the Bank of Russia. Author of more than 20 research papers; has government awards. Member of the Bank of Russia Board of Directors (since 18 October 2013)
