Biography

Dr. Wael M. Al Kattan is presently working as an Associate Professor and Consultant of Surgery, Director of the Academic and Student Affairs since January 2008, and the Head of Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine, Alfaisal University, since January 2013. He is a senior consultant surgeon in Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Department of Surgical Specialties in King Fahad Medical City, Ministry of Health. Dr. Al Kattan completed his Bachelor degree in medicine and surgery in 1997 from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He was appointed as an administrator in the Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, King Saud University, and he was granted a scholarship for his post graduate training in Canada. Dr. Al Kattan completed his general surgery residency training at the University of Toronto, Canada. He obtained his fellowship qualification (FRCSC) from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada in 2003. After obtaining his Canadian Board in general surgery, Dr. Al Kattan joined the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, as a fellow of the Royal College in the Department of Surgery and he successfully completed a fellowship in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic surgery and Liver Transplantation and a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery ( Laparoscopic Surgery) in 2005. Besides, Dr. Al Kattan has a great interest in medical education, particularly curriculum design and development, as well as assessment methods in health education. He obtained his Macy Program (Diploma Program for Educators and Health Care Professionals) from Harvard Macy Institute, Boston, USA, in 2009. He is currently finishing his master degree in medical education from the University of Dundee, Scotland, UK. Dr. Al Kattan contributed heavily in the founding of the College of Medicine, Alfaisal University, from its earliest times. He joined the College of Medicine, Alfaisal University in January 2008, and he was the head of the Curriculum Office from that time and for many years, until he was appointed as the director of Academic and Student Affairs. He worked heavily in developing an integrated spiral curriculum for the College of Medicine, along with his colleagues from the Curriculum Office. He designed a curriculum map and structured different blocks and courses along the three phases of the curriculum. As the director of the Academic and Student Affairs, he overlooked the Assessment Office, Curriculum Office, Student Affairs Office, Admission and Registration Committee, Student Development Committee and the Mentorship Program. Dr. Al Kattan is actively involved in teaching in the surgery clerkship block, Gastrointestinal block and the Endocrine block and in the postgraduate training in the General Surgery Residency Program. His main clinical practice and areas of expertise are in Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Upper Gastrointestinal Oncology surgery as well as advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery specially in the area of obesity and metabolic surgery.
