Biography

Prof. TOROVE LEIKNES Specialises in integration of membrane technology as a key component in advanced water treatment solutions targeting environmental engineering applications. He is working as Professor in Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia.

Research Interest

Dr. Leiknes' research interests lie in the integration of membrane technology as a key component in advanced water treatment solutions targeting environmental engineering applications. Research topics include: membrane technology combined with biological, physical, chemical processes for advanced water and wastewater treatment, solid - liquid separation, hybrid solutions, development of small compact water and wastewater treatment plants and strategies for water reuse. Current research activities focus on development of membrane bioreactors (MBR) based on hybrid solutions using biofilm/membrane processes, low-pressure membrane configurations in potable water and wastewater treatment (municipal, industrial, i.e. on board ships, and produced water from oil and gas production). Projects include; decentralized wastewater treatment in urban environments for local non-potable reuse. Treatment of water with impaired quality for agricultural reuse using different MBR concepts (e.g. aerobic/anaerobic MBR, micro algae MBR) targeting resource recovery and low energy requirements. Membrane bioreactor technologies adapted to advanced water treatment in recycling aquaculture systems. Application of inorganic membranes in water/wastewater treatment and membranes as a hygienic barrier (i.e. pathogen/viral removal). Membrane based technology for treatment of produced water in the O&G industry enabling various reuse strategies.
