Biography

Prof Balram Chowbay is Principal Investigator of the Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory in National Cancer Centre Singapore, and Director of the SingHealth Clinical Pharmacology Core. He is an Adjunct Professor of Clinical Sciences at both Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore and the School of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Nanyang Technological University. He is also head of the Laboratory Science Coordination Core of the Academic Medicine Research Institute and a visiting scientist at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Prof Balram has been actively involved in clinical pharmacology research and early-phase clinical trials of anti-cancer agents. His research has largely focused on the application of pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) principles to optimise individualised dosage regimens. He has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals, particularly in the field of pharmacogenomics and its influence on inter-individual and inter-ethnic variabilities in PK and PD outcomes. His contributions are particularly important in the context of Asian populations. He currently serves on several review panels and editorial boards.

Research Interest

To study the pharmacogenetics of genes involved in expressions of drug metabolising enzymes, drug transporters and drug targets in different Asian ethnic groups.
