Biography
Dr Tong is a consultant cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon routinely performing complex and combined procedures for thoracic and cardiovascular procedures. His main specialty is in adult heart surgery and he has extensive experience in coronary artery bypass surgery. He is one of the pioneers for all arterial grafts in Coronary Arterial Bypass Graft, (CABG), minimally invasive and off-pump CABG in Singapore. He was previously the Head and Senior Consultant of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Director of both the Heart and Lung Transplant Programs at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). During his stint at SGH, Dr Tong pioneered the first Heart Transplant (1990) and also led the first Lung Transplant in 2000. He is a current member in the editorial board for The Asia Pacific Heart Journal & Annals of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery, and a member for Advisory Board for Asian Cardiovascular & Thoracic Annals. He was the President (2013-2014) and Secretary-General (1993-2003) for the Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons in Asia, Prior to these, he had served four terms as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board in Mount Elizabeth Hospital (Singapore).
