Biography

Tay Beng Kang belonged to Nanyang Technological Institute’s pioneer graduating batch of 1985. He received his MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, from the National University of Singapore, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), in 1989 and 1999, respectively. Dr Tay has been a Faculty Member of NTU since 1992, where he began his academic career as Lecturer, and then was promoted to Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor. From 1999 to 2005, he concurrently held the appointment of Sub-Dean, Alumni Affairs, in the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE). In 2003, Dr Tay was awarded the NTU Alumni Service Award and in 2005, he was appointed as the Associate Chair (Administration) in the School of EEE. In 2008, Dr Tay was appointed as the Associate Chair (Research) in the School of EEE. Dr Tay is the Program Director of Diamond/Diamond-Like Carbon and Nanoelectronics Research Groups and Chairman of several committees. He has many years of experience in Thin Film Technology, especially in Tetrahedral Amorphous Carbon, Nanocomposite Carbon, and Carbon Nanotubes. Dr Tay has designed and built more than 4 research Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc systems which are still in use today. Dr Tay has published more than 150 papers in international journals. He has jointly invented an industrially viable Film Deposition System, based on Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc Technology, and is a Co-Inventor with 10 international patents. His research team was awarded the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Award and the National Technology Award, in 1997 and 2000, respectively, for outstanding R&D contributions relating to a new Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc Technology. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) and the Technical Editor for the EE publications of IES. Recently his team won the 2007 IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award for their work in Nano-engineered Carbon Hybrid Systems.
