Biography

Dr Gurpal Singh is a fellowship-trained Orthopaedic surgeon subspecialising in bone and soft tissue tumours, joint replacement of the hip and knee and sports injuries. Dr Singh graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2004 with a Dean's list award and gold medal and thereafter went on to pursue higher surgical training in conjunction with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK from 2006-2011. He completed his advanced specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2011 and was awarded the inaugural College of Surgeons Gold Medal for being the top candidate in the FPCSEd(Orth) examination which was held in affiliation with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr Singh was awarded the Ministry of Health Scholarship for advanced specialty training and he moved to Germany for two years to work with world leaders in Musculoskeletal Oncology and Hip and Knee Surgery. He completed two fellowships in complex joint replacement/hip and knee surgery and musculoskeletal oncology at the Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg, under Professor Christoph H. Lohmann, and at University Hospital Muenster under Professor Georg Gosheger and Professor Jendrik Hardes. Dr Singh has a special interest in new technologies in joint replacement surgery and pioneered robotic-assisted hip replacement surgery in Singapore. Dr Singh has led a team of orthopaedic surgeons to successfully perform the first two cases of robotic-assisted hip replacement surgery in NUH in December 2016 and January 2017. Robotic-assisted joint replacment surgery minimises human error of judgement and improves accuracy of implant placement, resulting in reduced complications and potentially increased life-span of the implant. Dr Singh's clinical practice consists of bone and soft tissue tumorus (benign and malignant), joint replacement (hip and knee), complex reconstructions of th ehip and knee, and arthroscopic (key hole) surgeries of the hip and knee including sports injuries. His academic interests include periprosthetic tissue responses to wear debris from failed joint replacements, infections and biomaterials in joint replacement. Dr Singh strongly believes that is is important to understand how the body deals with foreign materials such as wear particles from artificial joint replacements and he collaborates internationally with a team of research experts from Germany in an effort to continuously improve and minimise adverse tissue responses from the patient's body. One of his specialist areas of focus is dealing with patients who have metal allergies or who develop hypersensitivity reactions to artificial joints. Dr Singh has published extensively in this field. He is also very active in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as specialist doctors in the region.
