Dr. Allan Fong

Biography

Dr Allan Fong is the Head of the Cataract & Comprehensive Department at SNEC. He sees patients at the SNEC Main Centre (SGH Outram Campus), SNEC Eye Associates Clinic at Gleneagles Hospital and at the SNEC Alexandra Branch at Alexandra Hospital. Dr Allan Fong graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1999. He was awarded the 1997/8 Gold Medal & Book Prize in Ophthalmology by NUS and the Singapore Society of Ophthalmology (SSO). Dr Allan Fong obtained his MRCOphth (London) and MRCS (Edinburgh) in 2004, Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) from NUS in 2005, and FRCS (Edinburgh) in 2009. He completed Refractive Surgery and Cornea Fellowship at the Singapore National Eye Centre. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (Ophthalmology), Singapore. He is also a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), Asia Pacific Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (APACRS), International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), American Association of Ophthalmology (AAO), Singapore Society of Ophthalmology (SSO), Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Asia Cornea Society (ACS), Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK, London), the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (UK, Edinburgh), Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society, India (IIRSI), and the Singapore Medical Association (SMA). Dr Allan Fong is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, a Clinical Physician Faculty Member of the SingHealth Ophthalmology Residency Program and a past Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of NUS. He is actively involved in both postgraduate and undergraduate ophthalmology education. He is one of the main cataract surgery Trainers at SNEC, and is the director of the Basic Phacoemulsification Course since 2014. For administration, Dr Allan Fong is the member of the Medical Device Committee, Philanthropy and Development Committee, Outpatient Department Committee, Fellowship Coordination Committee, as well as, the Infection Control Committee. He was the past Head of SNEC Balestier Branch from 2011-2015. For clinical research, he is an Adjunct Clinician Investigator at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). Dr Allan Fong is in-charge of an on-going voluntary eye screening project called "Project I-Care" which screens for important eye conditions such as Cataract, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy etc. for the elderly and needy in various Homes for the Aged. He was bestowed the Public Service Medal (PBM, Pingat Bakti Masyarakat) for the 2013 National Day Awards in recognition for his public service and community work. Dr Allan Fong received the Healthcare Humanity Award (Open Category for Healthcare Worker) in 2016. He is also a recipient for Singapore Health Quality Service Gold Award in 2016.

Research Interest

He has particular interest in Cataract Surgery with Intra-ocular lens implants, Refractive Surgery (LASIK), Pterygium excision and conjunctival graft surgery, treatment of Cornea infections, Dry Eyes and Allergic eye conditions and general eye health screening such as Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma screening.
