Dr. Chia Shulyn Claramae

Biography

Dr Claramae Chia is a Consultant in the Division of Surgical Oncology, National Cancer Centre Singapore. She is trained in surgical oncology with a subspeciality focus on peritoneal-based malignancies, upper gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers. Dr Chia’s belief is that all cancer patients deserve the best treatment possible and that is what she aims to provide. Her passion for peritoneal based malignancies stem from the fact that many of these patients are currently being treated with palliative chemotherapy. Cytoreductive surgery(CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy(HIPEC) is a surgical option that can offer a survival benefit to select patients with peritoneal disesase but is not widely known. The surgery involves removal of the peritoneum, any involved organ and the introduction of heated chemotherapy drug directly into the abdominal cavity. Dr Chia hopes to increase awareness among patients and physicians with regards to the surgical options for these patients. In 2013, she was awarded the SingHealth Health Manpower Development Plan - Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Surgical Oncology Programme. She spent 9 months with Professor Olivier Glehen at the Centre Hospitalier Lyon Sud, France. The centre is one of the expert centres in France and one of the leading centres in the world for the treatment and research of peritoneal-based malignancies. In her time there, she saw a wide variety of peritoneal cases, participated in over a hundred surgeries for peritoneal disease and collaborated in their clinical research.
