Biography
Dr Chua won a national scholarship to read medicine at the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom. On graduation in 2001, he completed his housemanship and basic surgical training in the West of Scotland rotation based in Glasgow. He continued another year as a junior registrar in cardiothoracic surgery in Glasgow. Dr Chua gained further clinical experience in general surgery and trauma as a surgical fellow in St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospitals. During this period, he was appointed as clinical research fellow in the same hospital and embarked on a research project leading to a PhD. He was awarded the Rosetrees Research Fellowship and subsequently, his projects attracted full funding from the Medical Research Council of United Kingdom (MRC, UK). His series of projects in 'Peripheral and central mechanisms in oesophageal hypersensitivity' were presented orally in the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) as well as Society of Academic and Research Surgery UK (SARS). He was awarded the Young Investigator award and was the invited oral speaker to the World Congress of Esophageal Diseases (OESO) in 2008 and 2010 respectively. He was awarded PhD in surgery by University of London in 2011. Dr Chua was appointed as an AST registrar in cardiothoracic surgery in Department of CTVS, National University Hospital Singapore (NUH) in 2011 and he exited from the programme with the FRCS C-Th in 2015. In 2016, he was appointed as an Associate Consultant in National Cancer Centre Singapore. His clinical and research interests are in all aspects of thoracic surgery.
