Biography

Adj Assoc Prof Edmund Wong is the Deputy Medical Director (Clinical Services) and Head of the Surgical Retina Department at the Singapore National Eye Centre. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1991. He obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998, and in the same year, obtained the Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) degree from the National University of Singapore. Adj Assoc Prof Wong completed his fellowship with the Vitreo-Retinal Department in Singapore National Eye Centre in 2001 and a fellowship in advanced Vitreo-Retina at Beetham Eye Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School in 2003. Adj Assoc Prof Wong has a distinguished academic track record in Ophthalmology. A Gold Medal award winner, he continues to serve as Examiner in Ophthalmology, National University of Singapore and the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, United Kingdom. He also holds concurrent appointments as Clinical Lecturer in Ophthalmology, National University of Singapore, and Clinical Adjunct Fellow, Singapore Eye Research Institute. He is Principal Investigator in several studies of the retina involving diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and age-related macular degeneration. His subspecialty training in diseases of the vitreous and retina with special focus on diabetic retinopathy at the Singapore National Eye Centre and Harvard Medical School have equipped him with a strong base to treat patients with diseases such as complicated diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration and retinal detachment. He is well-experienced with state-of-art investigations, laser and surgery for the retina including sutureless, small-gauge vitrectomy. He is often invited to give lectures and demonstrations on retinal surgery regionally and internationally. In addition to diseases of the retina, Adj Assoc Prof Wong also has a strong interest in Cataract surgery and uses the most current small incision phacoemulsification techniques and intraocular lenses after consideration of each individual’s special circumstances. Adj Assoc Prof Wong believes that effective communication of findings, diagnosis, special features, and treatment options enhances a patient’s understanding of his or her unique condition and facilitates proper management.
