Biography
Assoc Prof Louis Tong graduated in 1993 with basic medical degree from the National University of Singapore, registered as a medical practitioner in 1994 and achieved accreditation as an ophthalmologist by the Singapore Medical Council in November 2004. He completed in training in ophthalmology at various centers in the United Kingdom (1996-2000) and in Singapore (2000-2004). He completed a 2 year overseas cornea research fellowship at the Ocular Surface Center, Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, as part of A*STAR national science scholarship. He holds an associate professor appointment at the Duke-NUS graduate medical school and joint appointment at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He currently holds several appointments at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI): principal clinician-scientist, head of ocular surface research group, head of research training and development, and co-head of ocular inflammation and immunity research group. He Is represented in International expert concensus panels like the international meibomian gland dysfunction workshop and Dry Eye Workshop II, and is member of organizations like the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society and International Ocular Surface Society. He is a frequent invited speaker at industry events, co-chairs one of the NMRC national scientific grant review panel, and sits on the Singhealth Duke Grant review committee. Assoc Prof Tong has been awarded an individual research grant from the National Medical Research Council to study dry eye and proteomics, the NMRC clinician-scientist award for senior investigator, the National Healthcare Innovation to Commercialisation grant (co-awardee), the Wong Hock Boon Society-Singapore Medical Association Outstanding Mentor Award and the SingHealth Publish!Award. He runs a dry eye clinic at the Singapore National Eye Center, as well as a general eye clinic focusing on cataract surgery. His research work includes translation of immunology-based treatments to ocular surface inflammation.
