Biography
Professor Belkin is a leading internationally recognized eye researcher, an author of over 200 scientific publications and over 20 patents and who received various research awards. His laboratory is dedicated to originating and enabling the transfer of technologies from inception and university-level research to clinical practice by providing expertise and facilities for laboratory, preclinical and clinical studies. He is involved in several such projects at various stages of development in lasers, optics, ophthalmic devices, pharmaceutics and biotechnology and in recent year he participated in establishing a few startup companies. One of his ideas, the ExPRESS miniature glaucoma implant, is in routine use internationally. He has recently shown that a hereditary retinal degeneration can be effectively treated. This is the first time that a genetically based retinal degeneration was proven treatable. He is now dedicated to performing clinical trials to determine whether such therapy is efficacious in treating other congenital and acquired retinal diseases.
