Biography

Dr Kaufman is the Ernst H. Bárány Professor of Ocular Pharmacology and immediate past Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, in Madison, Wisconsin. He is a physician-scientist, specializing in glaucoma. His research laboratory studies the physiology, pharmacology, cell biology, neural control and ageing of the primate aqueous humor formation and drainage, and the accommodative, apparatus, seeking to gain new pathophysiological insights and to develop novel pharmacologic and genetic therapies for human glaucoma and presbyopia. Dr Kaufman is a past President and past Executive Vice President of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, past President of the International Society for Eye Research, and has served on the US National Advisory Eye Council and numerous foundation and corporate scientific advisory boards. He has had continuous research funding from the US National Eye Institute for 35 years, has authored over 350 original scientific articles and 75 book chapters, co-edited several textbooks including the most recent editions of Adler’s Physiology of the Eye, and received numerous honors and awards. He was Editor-in-Chief of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science from 2008 through 2012. Dr Kaufman also holds an honorary Doctor of Medicine degree from Uppsala University in Sweden. Dr Kaufman is married to the novelist Margaret George, and together they have a daughter who earned an undergraduate degree from Harvard University and a doctorate from the University of California-Berkeley, in China and East-Asian studies. She lives with her husband and daughter in Washington DC, where she is a policy analyst / advisor in her major field. Dr Kaufman notes that while he was Chair, he could not find his other interests, which used to be history, political thought, espionage, theatre, certain types of music, and running.
