Lim Swee Teck

Biography

Dr Lim Swee Teck earned the name Dr. Friendly during his forty-two years of practice in managing children’s dental care over at his clinic in Singapore. Dr. Lim was born in Perak, Malaysia. He graduated from the University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1965. In 1968, he was appointed as a Research Fellow. Subsequently, he was awarded the National University of Singapore School of Postgraduate Medical Studies scholarship and graduated with a Master of Dental Surgery in 1970. He was further awarded with the prestigious Fulbright Hayes American Scholarship to specialise in Pediatric Dentistry. In 1972, he obtained the Master of Science (Pediatric Dentistry) and the Certificate of Pediatric Dentistry from the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA. Returning to Singapore in 1972 as the first male specialist in Children’s Dentistry, he joined the Faculty of Dentistry at the National University of Singapore. Together with another pediatric dentist, they spearheaded and formalised the pediatric dentistry department in the Faculty of Dentistry. Through research and teaching programs, the management and the art of communicating with children was developed and established. Dr. Lim continued to improve his communication techniques at his own practice which he set up in 1978. A modern day pioneer in children’s dentistry, he began to see results when his young patients enjoyed their dental visits instead of dreading them.
