Biography
Weerts holds an MSc in Estuarine Ecology from the University of Zululand. He is a marine and estuarine ecologist with over 20 years of experience in the field. Weerts’ recent work has included involvement in, and project leading of long term programmes aimed at monitoring potential impacts of major national infrastructural developments in South African ports, as well as large municipal and industrial deep-water outfalls. He has a research interest in the ecological functioning and role of habitats altered or modified by anthropogenic activities.
Research Interest
Weerts’ areas of interests lie in estuarine fishes, connectivity in coastal habitats, and in the development and application of principles to restore and maximise ecological potential in modified coastal systems.
