De la Rey van der Waldt is currently working as Professor (department of communication) in North-West University, South Africa.
Professor Van der Waldt received both his BA (Hons) as well as his Master’s degree in Communication Science at the University of the Orange Free State. In 1991 he received his PhD in Communication Science at the North-West University. He started his career in 1980 as a communication officer in what is now known as the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS). His journey in academia started when he joined the faculty at the University of Fort Hare in 1982 where he was one of the founding members of the department of communication. Since then he lectured in several communication fields (specifically advertising and marketing) at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of Pretoria, and headed the department of integrated communication at the Tshwane University of Technology. He was a visiting lecturer at Washington University (Seattle) USA, Christian University Ede in the Netherlands, Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany and delivered guest lectures at several other international universities. Professor Van der Waldt also owned the World of Waldt®, an advertising and marketing consultancy (1994-2009). His MA and PhD studies concentrated on television marketing and advertising. In 2005, his research focus changed to corporate reputation management and measurement. He is a reviewer for numerous academic publications and was the first Editor and Chief for the African Journal of Business Management (2009-2011). Currently he is an independent peer reviewer for The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). He received three global awards for his work as a country representative, editor and reviewer at the Global Business and Technology Association (GBATA) in Istanbul, New York and Helsinki for strategic communication. Professor van der Waldt holds a C National Research Foundation rating in reputation management and measurement.
