Biography
Catriona Macleod is Professor of Psychology at Rhodes University. She is a B-rated social scientist. Prof Macleod’s major scholastic contributions have been in two main areas: sexual and reproductive health and feminist theory in Psychology. She has written extensively in national and international journals in relation to teenage pregnancy, abortion, sex education, feminist psychology and postcolonialism. She is sole-author of a book entitled ‘Adolescence’, pregnancy and abortion: constructing a threat of degeneration (published by Routledge) which was awarded the Distinguished Publication Award by the Association for Women in Psychology, based in America. She is author of the Department of Health (2010) document, Strategy framework. Sexual and reproductive health amongst adolescents: comprehensive preventive and promotion strategies that will inform the Department of Health’s national planning regarding adolescent sexual and reproductive health services. Prof Macleod sits on the editorial boards of the South African Journal of Psychology and is Associate Editor of Psychology in Society and the prestigious international journal Feminism & Psychology. She received Vice-Chancellor awards for her research from the Universities of Zululand and Fort Hare, and research funding from the Johan Jacobs Foundation, the National Research Foundation, SANPAD, and the Mellon Foundation.
Research Interest
"Theoretical interests include feminist theory, post-structuralism (in particular Foucault and Derrida), embodiment theory and post-colonialism. Broad areas of teaching areas of Psychology: Developmental Psychology, Community Psychology, Critical Psychology, and Gender and Psychology. Current research interests: Termination of pregnancy; adolescent sexual and reproductive health; and gender issues. "
