Biography

Enocent Msindo is an Associate Professor of History. He is a National Research Foundation (NRF, RSA) rated researcher. He has wide-ranging research interests in African social and political history. Over the years, he has researched and published on social and political identities such as ethnicity, nationalism, chieftaincy, and also on marginalisation in precolonial, colonial and post-colonial Zimbabwe. Recently, he completed a major work on ethnicity and its intersection with other identities in Southern Zimbabwe which he published in his well-received monograph entitled Ethnicity in Zimbabwe: Transformations in Kalanga and Ndebele Societies, 1860-1990. The book was published by Rochester University Press in September 2012. As a very thorough historian, who strongly believes in solid archival and fieldwork based historical research as opposed to ‘desktop’ synthesis (not to say that ‘desktop’ research is bad!), Msindo is looking for serious, interested, honest and hard-working (post-) graduate students and research partners to engage with him in various researches of historical and interdisciplinary nature that would help put Africa (and their communities of origin) on the map.

Research Interest

Msindo is also interested in media history, propaganda and information policy studies in Africa and its relationship with the global information architecture. He is currently researching on information policy in colonial and post-colonial Zimbabwe. Media students, sociologists, political scientists and historians who would like to research on this subject are welcome to contact Prof. Msindo.
