Biography

Dr Jane Kerr (RN, RM, Diploma Nursing Education & Community Health, Diploma Nursing Administration, Certificate OHN, M.Cur. (Stellenbosch), PhD (UKZN), is a Nursing Management lecturer in the Discipline of Nursing. She has 15 years’ experience as a Nurse Manager in two hospitals in Durban; one hospital was a Private hospital while the other was a government subsidised hospital. Her experienced is focused on the planning and provision of staffing in a nursing service. While studying towards her PhD she has received grants from Sigma Tea Tau (STTI) small grants and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, through the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH). She completed her PhD in 2014. She has had a varied career, commencing her training at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town; studied midwifery at Greys Hospital; taught at Carinus College, Grootte Schuur Hospital and Greys College of Nursing; practiced as an Occupational Health nurse in the Metal Box Liquid Packing plant in Isithebe and has worked as a medical representative for Adcock Ingram. Dr Kerr commenced her academic career at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2009 where she has been actively involved in the refurbishing and relocation of the School of Nursing and Family Medicine skills laboratory and has been involved in the procurement of specialised teaching equipment e.g. Sim Man and Sim Mom & Sim baby. Dr Kerr presented her Master Degree research at the Stellenbosch University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal Colleges of Health Sciences research days in 2009 and her PhD at the 2013 University of KwaZulu-Natal College of Health Sciences Research day. She presented a poster of her PhD at the STTI conference in Bloemfontein 2013. She presented a discussion of staffing calculations at the International Midwives Conference (ICM) in Durban in 2011. During 2009 she attended and passed two M Ed modules for non-degree purposes i.e. Research supervision and Assessment in Higher Education. She has actively encouraged the use of Moodle in her teaching and through students uploading assignments onto this platform has empowered previously computer illiterate nurses to exit her modules as computer literate individuals.
