Biography
Prof Annelize Nienaber holds the degrees BHons (English) HDE (Wits) LLB LLM (Pret) Dipl Datametrics (Unisa) LLD (Pret). Prof Nienaber is an editor of the African Human Rights Law Journal and an associate editor of the Journal of Contemporary Roman-Dutch Law and an assistant editor of De Jure. She obtained a C2 NRF-rating in November 2015. Prof Nienaber was appointed as senior lecturer in 1999 in the Department of Legal History and was promoted to associate professor in 2008. She is admitted as an advocate of the High Court of South Africa. She is the legal advisor and deputy-chairperson to the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee and the Chairperson of the Faculty of Law’s Research Ethics Committee. She was the Chairperson of the University’s Disciplinary Committee (Students) from 2008 to 2010. She is a member of the International Association of Bioethics and a member of the International Law Association. She is an editor of the African Human Rights Law Journal and an associate editor of the Journal of Contemporary Roman-Dutch Law and an assistant editor of De Jure. She is a past national representative and current member of Clarity. She was awarded an NRF grant in 1998 to 1999 (with Prof F Viljoen) to conduct empirical research and a study tour of several countries and to host a Conference entitled "Plain legal language Conference and Workshop: Making South African law more accessible and understandable" at the University of Pretoria. In 2003 she was awarded a Fogarty Foundation / National Institutes of Health, USA scholarship to conduct research at Yale University on ethics and human rights in medical research. She is a deputy-chairperson of the Research Ethics Committee of Faculty of Health Sciences and a member of the Animal Ethics Committee at the University of Pretoria. She is the chairperson of the Faculty of Law's Research Ethics Committee. She was also the chairperson of the University of Pretoria's Disciplinary Committee: Students from 2008 to 2010.
Research Interest
Her main areas of interest are the law and ethics relating to medical research, international human rights law, international law theory, and the legal problems of HIV and AIDS.
