Biography
Chris Nagel is professor of the Department of Mercantile Law and holds the degrees BA (Law), LLB and LLD from the University of Pretoria. The title of his LLD thesis was “Aspekte van voorlopige en summiere vonnis in die Suid-Afrikaanse tjekreg†(Aspects of provisional sentence and summary judgment in the South African law of cheques). He was admitted as advocate of the High Court of South Africa in 1979. He joined the Department of Mercantile Law, University of Pretoria in 1977 as a student assistant. In 1978 he was appointed as junior lecturer in the Department of Jurisprudence, UNISA, and promoted to lecturer in 1979. He returned to the Department of Mercantile Law, University of Pretoria in 1982 as senior lecturer. He was promoted to associate professor in 1988 and was appointed as full professor in 1989.
Research Interest
His main areas of interest are negotiable instruments and the law of contract.
