Hermie Coetzee

Biography

Prof Hermie Coetzee is an associate professor in the Department of Mercantile Law. She holds the degrees BCom(Law) (cum laude) (Pret), LLB (cum laude) (Pret), LLM (by dissertation) (cum laude) (Pret) entitled “The impact of the National Credit Act on civil procedural aspects relating to debt enforcement” and LLD (Pret). The title of her LLD thesis was "A comparative reappraisal of debt relief measures for natural person debtors in South Africa". She is an attorney of the High Court of South Africa (Gauteng North Provincial Division), a member of the World Bank Working Group for the Treatment of the Insolvency of Natural Persons, a member of the Academics Sub-Committee of INSOL International, a Member of the Centre for Insolvency, Labour and Company Law (CILC), and a member of the Society of Law Teachers of Southern Africa (SLTSA). Hermie joined the Department of Procedural Law and the University of Pretoria Law Clinic in 2006 where she provided legal services in the community. In January 2009, she was appointed as lecturer in the Department of Mercantile Law and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2013. She was promoted to associate professor with effect 1 January 2017.  She serves as programme co-ordinator for the BCom Law degree and is a member of the Teaching and Learning Committee of the Faculty of Law. She authored numerous academic articles and was involved in many contract research initiatives. Hermie was also a core reviewer of the “Report on the Treatment of Insolvency of Natural Persons” 2012 that was commissioned by the World Bank through the Legal Vice-Presidency - Working Group of the Insolvency Law Task Force.

Research Interest

Her main fields of interest are Consumer Credit and Insolvency Law.
