Research Interest

Prof Karl Kunert investigates bioactive compounds for abiotic stress protection with a specific interest in processes responsible for premature plant senescence induced by environmental stresses to understand in particular the function of the protease-protease inhibitor system in plant senescence. In his research, he combines skills in plant stress physiology and plant phenotyping of non-engineered and engineered soybean plants to obtain an enhanced lifespan and yield by preventing protease action. Since stress-induced soybean nodule senescence is still greatly uncharacterized, he is specifically investigating soybean nodule development under both natural and stress conditions.
