Biography
Koos Malan is professor of public law and holds the degrees BA (Pret) BA Hons (Political Science) (Pret) BIuris (Unisa) LLB (Unisa) LLD (Unisa). The title of his LLD thesis was “‘n Jurisprudensiële ontleding van die staatlike paradigma en van staatlike identiteit†(A jurisprudential analysis of the statist paradigm and statist identity). Koos Malan started his legal career in 1983 as a clerk in the Department of Justice. From 1985 to 1987 he was a state prosecutor, and from 1987 to 1990 he was a magistrate, and between 1991 and 1999 he was a lecturer in practical legal training at Justice College. He joined the former Vista University in 2000 as a senior lecturer. He was promoted to associate professor in 2003. In 2004 Vista University (Mamelodi) was incorporated into the University of Pretoria and he became a member of the Department of Public Law. He was promoted to full professor from 1 January 2007.
Research Interest
His main areas of interest are constitutional theory, democracy, minority questions and language law.
