Biography
Maleka Femida Cassim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mercantile Law. A qualified medical doctor, she holds an MBBCh (with distinction) from the University of the Witwatersrand. She also holds a postgraduate LLB and an LLM in Company law from the University of the Witwatersrand, both degrees being awarded summa cum laude. Femida obtained her PhD in Commercial Law from the University of the Cape Town. Femida is an admitted Attorney and Notary Public of the High Court of South Africa. She has been ranked by the National Research Foundation as a promising young researcher, and holds a Y2 NRF rating. She joined the University of the Witwatersrand as a lecturer in January 2007, and was promoted within 2 years to Senior Lecturer. In January 2011, she joined the Mercantile Law Department of the University of Pretoria as a Senior Lecturer, and was promoted to Associate Professor in January 2016. Femida was nominated in 2013 for the Woman of the Year Award by several women’s community and social groups in the Pretoria area. In 2014 she received a certificate of Recognition of Achievements and Positive Contribution to Society.
Research Interest
Femida’s main areas of interest are Company Law, the Law of Business Entities and Commercial Law.
