Biography
Dr Reghard Brits is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mercantile Law at the University of Pretoria and holds the degrees BCom (law) (2007), LLB (2009) and LLD (2012) from Stellenbosch University. The title of his doctoral thesis was Mortgage Foreclosure under the Constitution: Property, Housing and the National Credit Act (2012). He also holds a Certificate in Insolvency Law and Practice from the University of Pretoria, accredited by the South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA). During the final year of his LLB studies (2009) and while writing his LLD thesis (2010-2012), Dr Brits was a research intern at the South African Research Chair in Property Law under Prof AJ van der Walt at Stellenbosch University. After completing his doctorate in 2012, he spent three years as a postdoctoral research fellow of the aforementioned Chair (2013-2015). In January 2016 he joined the Department of Mercantile Law at the University of Pretoria as a Senior Lecturer. Dr Brits is a member of the Society of Law Teachers of Southern Africa, the South African Property Law Teachers’ network, the Centre for Insolvency, Labour and Company Law, as well as an academic member of INSOL International.
Research Interest
Dr Brits’s main research interest is the law of secured credit (real security rights). Related interests include consumer credit law, banking and finance law, aspects of property and constitutional property law, and insolvency law.
