Wessel Le Roux

Biography

Prof Wessel le Roux has been Professor in Public Law at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) since January 2011. He teaches courses in Immigration and Refugee law, Statutory Interpretation, and Constitutional Rights Interpretation. He was awarded an LLD degree in Legal Philosophy (jurisprudence) by the University of Pretoria in 2002, for a thesis entitled “The aesthetic republic: Law and judgment in Nietzsche, Arendt and Lyotard”. Before assuming his position at the UWC, he taught jurisprudence and constitutional law at the University of South Africa (UNISA), where he also served as the Head of the VerLoren van Themaat Centre for Public Law Studies (from 2006 to 2010). During this period he was awarded a Georg Foster research fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2008-2009). 

Research Interest

The aesthetics of law and legal culture, with specific reference to courtroom design and architecture; and (ii) conceptions of democracy and citizenship in post-apartheid constitutional law, with specific reference to the relationship between democracy and migration.
