Biography
Dr Melanie Samson is currently working as Associate Professor of Geography at University of Witwatersrand. She worked for a number of trade unions and NGOs, including: the South African Municipal Workers Union; the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa; and the global research-policy-action network Women in Informal Employment, Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO). She have also previously worked as a researcher at the Education Policy Unit (EPU) and Society, Work and Development Institute (SWOP), both at Wits University.
Research Interest
Her current research projects focus on processes in South Africa and other BRICS countries to integrate reclaimers (also known as ‘waste pickers’) into municipal waste management systems and the recycling economy.
