Biography
Gorka Basañez obtained his Ph. D. in 1996 at the UPV/EHU. He then joined the Dept. of Cellular and Molecular Membrane Biophysics (NIH, Bethesda, USA) for 5 years to study apoptosis- and virus-related membrane remodeling processes. In 2003, he obtained a permanent position as a CSIC researcher at the newly created Biophysics Unit (CSIC-UPV/EHU). At the Biophysics Unit, he began a new research line on mitochondrial membrane proteíns implicated in cell death and cancer. During the last 10 years his research has been focused on BCL2 family proteins and their modulatory factors. The most relevant findings of his group are related to developing novel reductionist systems for mechanistic studies of BCL2 family proteins, and elucidation of manifold roles of lipids in BCL2 family protein function, including the original proposal of the “Lipidic Pore Model” for apoptotic membrane permeabilization. He has published around 50 scientific papers, mostly on membrane-related topics.
