D. Jorge Laborda FernÁndez

Biography

Jorge Laborda Fernández is currently Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Castilla-La Mancha. He graduated in Chemical Sciences in 1981. He did the work of his doctoral thesis in The Center for Scientific Research on Cancer, in Paris, France, where he worked from 1984 to 1987 and received his PhD in Chemical Sciences from the University of Zaragoza in 1987. He moved to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA that same year. postdoctoral stay of one year. The following year, he joined the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he worked for three years. In 1991, he joined the "Center for the Evaluation and Research of Biological Products" of the Food and Drug Administration, at the National Institutes of Health, USA. where he established himself as director of research and obtained a fixed position (tenure) of Senior Principal Investigator. In 1999, he joined the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Castilla-La Mancha as Director of the Area of ​​Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In 2014, Dr. Laborda joined the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UCLM. Dr. Laborda has collaborated on about forty research projects. He has been responsible for evaluating numerous projects on new anticancer therapies proposed by US or European biotechnology companies. He has also been chair of the US committee for the development of regulations on the use of transgenic plants for the production of drugs for human use. The fruit of his research work is the discovery of two genes involved in the control of cell differentiation through the negative modulation of the signal of the NOTCH receptors, their important contribution to the discovery of the receptor for an important factor of differentiation and the discovery of a hormone receptor of the hormone resistin. From November 2003 to May 2004, Dr. Laborda made a stay in the European Commission as an Outstanding National Expert to work in the management and promotion of pioneering areas of biomedical research, such as Synthetic Biology. In April 2004, Dr. Laborda was elected Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the UCLM, since he performed until April 2008. Dr. Laborda also carries out a scientific outreach effort. He has published the books "They Have Been Cloned The Gods", and "The thousand and one bases of the DNA and other scientific histories", "Funnel of the intelligence and other tests", "Adenio Fidelio", a novel of scientific subject for adolescents , "A Moon, A Civilization, why the Moon tells us that we are alone in the universe," and the work Circumstances Encadenadas, a novel about the importance of genes in the human condition. He has participated in numerous programs in Radio Nacional, Cadena SER, Punto Radio and local television dedicated to science, and is an occasional columnist in El País, the Herald of Aragon and habitual of the newspaper La Tribuna de Albacete.
