Josep Maria Palet Martínez

Biography

Doctor of History (Prehistory and Ancient History) from the University of Barcelona (1994). Specialized in landscape archeology and studies of territory in the ancient world. He undertook his doctoral thesis on the territorial study of the Barcelona Plan of protohistory in the Middle Ages, under the direction of Josep Maria Gurt. Published in 1997, he received several research awards for his methodological contributions and knowledge about the structuring of ancient territories. Formed in several foreign centers (University of Provence, France, and Stockholm University, in Sweden) he specializes in archeology of landscape, archeomorphology and archaeological surveys, archeology of altimontan spaces, socio-environmental interactions, road network, agrarian spaces , centurations, rural settlement, pastoralism. During 1996 and 1997 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Aix-en-Provence. Under the direction of Philippe Leveau, he participated in several research projects focused on areas of low and high Provença (Arles and Sisteron) and the French Alps (Gap, Champsaur). From 1998 to 2005 he was an associate researcher at the CNRS UMR 6573. Between 1998 and 2002, he worked at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) with contracts for the re-incorporation of doctors and as associate professor. Together with Josep Guitart, he has promoted several studies of territory in different areas of Catalonia, especially in the Penedès and the Camp de Tarragona. With the archeology team of the UAB he participated in the tasks of directing the excavations in the Roman city of Iesso (Guissona) and completed his training in the field of field archeology applied to ancient cities . He has collaborated with the Catalan Institute of Classical Archeology since its creation in 2002 as a scientific advisor to the line of research in Archeology of the landscape, settlement and territory. Between 2004 and 2008 he was a researcher at the Ramon y Cajal program of the MEC at the ICAC. Since 2009, he is senior researcher at the Institute and director of the Landscape Archeology Research Group (GIAP) of the ICAC. He manages several Landscape Archeology projects focusing on altimontan spaces (Serra del Cadí, Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror-Andorra; Capçaleres del Ter -Ripollès, Alt Congost) and in flat land areas (Camp de Tarragona, Barcelona, ​​Vallès, Pla de l'Empordà, Valencia plain). He has extensive university teaching experience. He is a consultant professor at the UOC, deputy director of the ICAC and coordinator of advanced teaching.
