Biography

    Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarra (1987). Doctor of Medicine from the University of Valladolid (1993). Title of Doctor of Family by the Ministry of Health and Consumption (1994) and of Ophthalmology by the University of Valladolid (1993).   He has had specialization and developmental stages in macular, vitreous and retinal diseases in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Boston (trauma and tumors), in the Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston (macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy), in the New York Presbyterian Columbia University Hospital (Vitreoretinal Surgery), Mount Sinai Hospital (later uveitis), and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York (intraocular tumors).     Research Areas Participation in more than 35 Research Projects and Clinical Trials as principal investigator. He is a leading researcher in the TARGET-AMD Multinational European project pioneer in gene therapy in age-related macular degeneration with transposons. Director of the Laboratory of experimental ophthalmology of the Faculty of Medicine University of Navarra. Member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Retinal and Vitreous Society and the retina Plus Foundation. National Coordinator of the Research Program on retinal diseases of the "RETICS Oftared" of the Institute of Health Carlos III of Madrid. ACTIVITY   As a teacher Professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Navarra (through a competition for the National Habilitation System) since 2007.    Three Research Sessions recognized by the CNEAI (National Evaluation Commission for Research Activity). 2 July 2012.   Director of 9 doctoral theses, five of which have received national awards for the best doctoral thesis. As researcher Author of more than 110 scientific publications. Author of 8 books and 19 chapters of books. He has given more than 250 communications to congresses, national and international invited talks, presentations in courses and seminars.   Coordinator of the DMAE project of the research network RETICS of the Institute of Health Carlos III called Ocular Pathology of the aging, Visual Quality and Quality of Life, as well as coordinator of the project of retinal diseases in the new RETICS in Ocular pathology prevalent and chronic OFTARED.   Evaluator of the Archives Journal of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology since January 1997. Evaluator of the International Journals Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, and Ophthalmology. Evaluator of the National Evaluation and Prospective Agency of the Ministry of Education and Culture. Member of the Scientific Committee of the Journal of Medicine of the University of Navarra. Since January 1998.     Director of the "Retina Course" from 2002 to 2013, organized by the Department of Ophthalmology of the Clinic University of Navarra, Pamplona.

Research Interest

 Vitreoretinal diseases, macular pathology such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and myopia magna. She has been performing vitreoretinal surgeries for more than 20 years, such as retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes and macular holes. It is also responsible for the treatment of tumors of the eyeball such as melanomas and posterior uveitis.
