Biography
David García Fresnadillo (M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry, 1991, and Ph.D. in Chemistry, 1996, Complutense University of Madrid, UCM, Ph.D. Advisor: Prof. G. Orellana). During his Ph.D. he worked on the synthesis, photophysical and photochemical characterization of luminescent Ru(II) complexes for optical sensors development. Between 1993 and 1995 he spent several months with Profs. A. M. Braun and E. Oliveros at the Lehrstuhl für Umweltmesstechnik (Engler-Bunte Institüt, Universität Karlsruhe, Germany) studying the photosensitized production of molecular singlet oxygen by homoleptic and heteroleptic Ru(II) complexes in homogeneous and (micro)heterogeneous phase. After a short stay at the Laboratory of Water Analysis (Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, Madrid) he became Assistant Professor at the Organic Chemistry Department of UCM (1997-2002). Postdoctoral researcher in 1999 with Prof. A. Kirsch-DeMesmaeker at the Service de Chimie Organique-Physique (Free University of Brussels, Belgium) where he studied the photophysics and photochemistry of DNA oligonucleotides labelled with Ru(II) complexes as molecular photoprobes and phototools for DNA. In 2003 he became Associate Professor at UCM and started to develop singlet oxygen photosensitizing materials for environmental (water disinfection and decontamination with solar reactors) and biomedical (antimicrobial photodynamic therapy, APDT) applications. Since 2009 he is an Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry with tenure at UCM and, in 2010, he joined the research group of Prof. Nazario Martín. His current research interests focus on the design, synthesis, structural and photophysical characterization of carbon nanostructures aiming to applications in the field of photochemistry. He is a current member of th Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry, its Group of Photochemistry and the European Photochemistry Association.
