Biography
"After finishing his studies in Biological Sciences, Ismael Galve-Roperh completed his Doctoral Thesis on the regulation of signaling pathways in astroglia cells and their role in the production of neuronal survival factors (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I, Faculty of Sciences Chemistry, Universidad Complutense de Madrid). These studies aroused interest in the study of the role of sphingolipids in the regulation of cell survival and proliferation, which was extended with a postdoctoral stay in the laboratory of Dr. S. Spiegel of Georgetown University participating in the study of rheostat proliferation / cell death by the balance between sphingosine-1-phosphate and ceramide levels. The reincorporation to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I, first as Associate Professor and later as Researcher Ramón y Cajal in the group of Dr. Manuel Guzmán, had as main object of study the study of the antitumor action of cannabinoids against tumors (gliomas), as well as the study of intracellular signaling mechanisms activated by the CB 1 receptor . Since February 2008 he is Professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. A since 2001 within the Group Signaling Cannabinoids (UCM), Ismael Galve-Roperh coordinates the research for the study of the role of the endocannabinoid system in the regulation of neurogenesis in various pathophysiological situations in both the adult brain and during the development of the nervous system. In parallel, the group has developed an active research work on the therapeutic role of the activation of CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors in different neurodegenerative processes such as those occurring during Huntington's disease, neuroinflammatory processes or neuronal excitotoxicity."
